Barry, South Wales: Ancient History: Part 1

Posted By Owen Jones on April 13, 2009 @ 3:09 am
by Owen Jones

The majority of what we have come to know about Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan in which it is to be found, has been gathered from the observation of old properties in the area. However, many of these are in a very bad state and have been for a very long time. There are also legendary tales like the one about Joseph of Arimathea, who traded tin across the channel in Glastonbury and was one of the first missionaries to the country.

It is a widely-held traditional belief that the father of Caractacus took him to Rome where they both converted to Christianity. They later returned to the Vale of Glamorgan with the missionary Bran The Blessed. It is also well-known that Christianity had gained much popular belief in the Vale by the early fourth century and that several bishops on the Council of Rome were from the area.

One of the oldest shrines in the vicinity is St. Baruch’s Church on Barry Island, but it is also in very poor condition. Barry Island was one of the most important monastic retreats of the period in south Wales. Steep and Flat Holm islands in the Bristol Channel were also highly significant in this regard. Another very important part of the puzzle was St. Illtyd’s Seminary in Llantwit Major which had 2,200 students.

A castle was constructed on the site of an old Roman fort and naval shipyard, which had been on Porthkerry Point, although it protruded further out to sea then than it does now. Furthermore, many wolf and deer bones have been found between Barry and Sully, proving these animals’ existence there in vast numbers Arrowheads, flints, needles and coins show that people inhabited the area with them.

‘The Island’, as it is known locally, was first named Baruch’s Island after St. Baruch, who was found washed up on one its beaches dead in 700 AD. He had been drowned on his return from Flat Holm, where it was common practice for religious students to spend Lent.

He and Gwelches had been disciples of St. Cadoc at the time. On their return to the island, they realized that they had left their enchiridion (religious manual) behind and St. Cadoc made them go back and get it. They never returned alive. St. Baruchs most famous disciple, St. Illtyd was educated there.

The island at Barry has had several names including “Island of the Saints” and “Insular of Peiros”. St. Peiro was St. Illtyd’s successor as leader of the seminary and St. Samson’s mentor. St. Doeninas was the leader of another abbey on the island at nearby Friars’ Point.

Campbell then dazzled his bizarre experience as a card counter in Las Vegas.

He was discovered by his Math professor portrayed by Kevin Spacey when he successfully solved a difficult Monty Hall problem in class. Crowd-free camping

At many state and private parks around the country, it seems like the only way to avoid overly crowded parks, lots of noise, and the long lines to the showers is to camp in the off-season. Here are tips to consider if you don’t want crowded camping.

Camp during the week, not on the weekends – many people are weekend campers. Not as many camp during the week. Although campgrounds will be busy in the peak summer months of July and August, it probably won’t be filled to capacity during the week. But, even if it is filled to capacity during the week; the beaches, biking trails, hiking trails, etc. won’t be as crowded because there won’t be the influx of people who come on the weekend to swim, hike, bike, etc.

Camp when school is still in session – if you have kids in school, this tip may not be that helpful, but keep in mind that it’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world to take your kids out of school to go on a camping trip, especially if you enrich that trip with learning activities such as going to the nature centers near or in the park; have excursions on the trails; and pick up materials at the park office or nature center that are usually available for free with different learning activities to do while hiking such as identifying trees and plants.

If you home school your children or if they go to a year-round school or modified year round school, there is probably at least one time during the year where it’s nice enough to take them camping when most other kids are in school, which will mean less crowded campgrounds.

Camp during slightly off peak times – the campgrounds are much less busy before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. Just make sure you check to see when the park opens and closes for the year and when bathroom facilities are turned off for the season.

For example, at my favorite state park, the bathroom facilities are shut down around the 15th of October every year and aren’t turned back on until May 15, but part of the campground stays open year round. The pit toilets are open the entire year but anything with running water is turned off to avoid having pipes burst when the weather gets cold because the buildings aren’t heated. This isn’t a problem if you have a camper with a bathroom facilities. But if you tent camp or have a popup camper without a bathroom that’s another story.

For a fun-filled and unforgettable camping experience, be sure to visit Ohio Campsites.

It’s Easy To Travel Across Europe By River

As for many travelers, the idea of a cruise vacations may automatically conjure images of equatorial islands and cocktails sipped on the deck from a big oceangoing vessel. While this is a big component of cruises, there is a little-known alternative that is bound to delight you: European river travel.

Regardless of whether you are new to cruising on ships or if it is an activity you have indulged in often, one advantage of European river travel is that it’s an activity that you can enjoy in every season, unlike tropical cruises.

Plus, with European river travel you will be able to visit many magnificent but little known places and sights, mostly inaccessible even to a standard Atlantic or Mediterranean cruise, while avoiding automotive traffic, airports, and big tourist crowds.

While many trips involving around European river travel center on the visit of urban areas, there are valid alternatives if you prefer to visit more laidback areas, or even unspoiled nature in natural parks and sparsely settled areas. You can even combine urban and rural sights.

An Internet search will guide you to some first-rate reductions on European river cruises, especially if you are able to wait until the last moment before reserving your trip.

If you want to go the full way, the best trip that you can go on is a one-month voyage across the continent’s main rivers, the Rhine and the Danube, which are connected by canals in southern Germany. With this kind of trip, European river travel will take you all the way from Holland to the Black Sea.

You’ll visit Vienna, the origin of the waltz, and the thirteenth-century cathedral at Cologne. You’ll visit the overwhelming Danube Gorge and the Stone Bridge at Regensburg, which has been bearing traffic safely over the Danube for more than a thousand years.

The vessels used for European river travel are far smaller than their ocean-cruising counterparts, usually having space for less than two hundred travelers. So you will be treated with a far more bespoke service, and you will see sights that you couldn’t glimpse at from the decks of the ocean ship giants.

The region truly has a lot to offer to the discerning traveler who likes to enjoy refined culture, entertainment, and cuisine at a pleasant pace. And in fact, maybe after such a momentous trip you may even decide to come back for more European river travel on the continent’s other rivers.

The Most Excellent Way to Get Cheap Holidays

Posted By Robert M Freeman on April 7, 2009 @ 3:04 am
by Robert M Freeman

The busy frantic routine of the contemporary world makes everybody wish for vacations at least once every year. A lot of people find it calming and pleasant to spend vacations in some foreign land. But unluckily, most people are incapable to affording vacations in foreign places because they would not be able to spare sufficient money to take their families on such vacations.

Nonetheless luck hasn’t run out for these people as they can still have truly discounted holidays without much setback. The procedure is not something miraculous and anyone with a little effort can diminish their vacation expenses to such low levels that they would still keep a healthy amount of wealth in their hand.

The thing is that most people do not realise that they can save a lot of money just on tickets by booking well before their trips. Tickets and hotel room costs are generally higher during the vacation season than they are at other times of year. However that is not a fixed rule as some hotels and airline companies offer special discounts during holiday season to promote their sales. Thus one should always be on the lookout of such offers.

Planning the vacation well before time is always a good idea. One should monitor costs of different trips and vacation packages and should go for them when they are at their lowest. It is true that these days it takes a lot of fortune to afford hotels for vacations. But like all other things, there is also a solution to this problem. One can get good deals at vacation rental homes. These are actually homes offered by their owners for vacations. They are at times much cheaper than hotels and also provide the comfort of a home like atmosphere.

One can also hire a travelling agent to get the best of all the options available. This is a good option especially for those people who are not experience enough to select the best deals. Travelling agents deal with vacation packages every day therefore selecting the best holiday package in a limited budget is not a problem for them. Travelling agents are also advisable if one is uncertain about the details of some vacation spot. For example if one is uncertain about the various accommodation options available in the desired location then a travelling agent will certainly prove to be helpful.

Conversely, clearly hiring a travelling agent will be a bit high-priced consequently to curtail costs, one should do his own examine and try to find the best possible and reasonable deals. These days there are many travelling websites which provide the feature to browse their deals online. Thus one can see all the offered choices and opt from them right from the comfort of his home.

Selecting the time of trip is perchance the most imperative of all things. As stated earlier, different travelling firms have different deals at different times of the year. Hence one might be able to get a low-priced offer and save a considerable amount of cash for other things.

Last but not the least, one can also minimise expenses by selecting a cheap airline. Some airlines have much lower fares than others. There might be various reasons for that, for example; some airlines make a couple of stops at different locations before reaching their final destination. Thus they are cheaper than direct airlines. Similarly some airlines do not offer many facilities and thus their fares are lower than others.

Big and huge: That’s how Americans like their things, from the size of the meal servings to big gas-guzzler cars to large home spaces. Other countries also claim that our egos are also the biggest around, but I believe there is some truth to this. What’s not to be proud of? We like big things, and we get big things.

When one talks about big things, one will always get a visual image of Texas and Texans, where “bigger” is a way of life. This state has one of the largest areas of land in the United States, and they’re also bigwigs in livestock production. But Texas isn’t just any old stretch of farmland, either. There is also a very large growth of economy here and we’re proud of the technological advancements we have made.

This state is also a cultural giant. Traditionally, Texas is known as a blend of Southwestern and Southern culture. But over the year, Texas has welcome a various mix of cultures over the years, no doubt because of the economic boom, as a lot of people have come to Texas and taken up permanent residence here. The variety of cultures has prompted the appearance of different fairs and festivals.

Even with their fairs, Texans like to make them bigger than normal. Instead of having lots of small fairs for different cultures, Texan events are a marvel of shows and crafts that satisfy a very large appetite for culture and the arts. Whether you’re looking for Native American, Mexican or Asian themed fairs, you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for here. Search online then visit them to see the grandeur of Texas Shows.

Or, you may want to contribute a bit to these grand events yourself. It’s easy; just register to rent a booth and space for yourself, and show off your cultural lineage through your arts and crafts. If you have talent and would like to share it, then you’ve come to the right place! Search for schedules and venues now and be part of the Texas Fairs and Festival experience!
