Parent Warning – Cell Phones Can Land Your Teen in Jail

by Aaron Siegel

As a parent you might not have even heard of it yet, it’s called sexting. More and more teenagers are engaging in this activity making sexting a phenomena that hasn’t been seen in years. More importantly, your teen can end up behind bars doing it.

Sexing is basically the act of phone sex over a cell phone, but rather than with audio, with text. As simple as it may sound, it gets more complex. You see, texting now comes with a popular function called photo sharing. Photo sharing allows images to be taken and transmitted with a text message from a cell phone and sent immediately and read. Every cell phone now comes with a camera and texting capabilities these days, so chances are your teen already uses this technology.

Many might argue and debate that the practice of sexting is more an age of innocence and issue of more than hormones than anything else but law enforcement officials are taking the practice not as lightly and are gearing up for war.

It has already been established that sexting can make your child vulnerable to sexual predators. The law has been working around the clock dealing with the ever growing issue, but now, sexual predators are not the only ones that can be charged with a crime.

Due to laws already in place to battle child pornography and it’s transmission over the Internet, teenagers are now being charged with distribution of child pornography. This means if your teen sends an image of themselves that is inappropriate over the Internet, even a teen their own age, they can be charged with distributing of child pornography.

As technology use increases in the world it is more apparent than ever that parents need to discuss with their kids not only the dangers of sexual predation, but the dangers of a criminal record now too. Not talking with your child about this added threat can permanently hurt their future.

It may not be easy to control a hormonal teenager even with all the parenting skills in the world. If you find yourself worrying about your child and their behavior you may want to explore other options to protect them. One option is to block Internet options from their text plans so that they cannot send or receive images from their phone. Remember that simply unsubscribing from the add on service may not stop the service altogether so you will want to make sure the phone is entirely blocked from that function.

How to Know When Your Baby is Teething

Posted By Keira Adams on March 26, 2009 @ 4:37 am
by Kim Archer

Babies can be pretty fussy when they’re teething. The bad news is that they seem to be perpetually teething in the first two years or so. This makes it difficult to tell whether your child has a new tooth coming in or whether something else is wrong. To help you out, here are some of the signs that a new tooth is about to make an appearance in your baby’s mouth.

If your baby seems like he or she is getting a cold, it might in fact be teething. When the teeth come in, they sometimes put pressure on the baby’s sinuses or ear canals. This creates the appearance of having a cold. You might only notice some minor sinus congestion or it could be as severe as a painful ear infection.

Some people aren’t aware that baby teething can lead to ear infections. Sometimes a baby will develop this painful condition because the emerging teeth are placing pressure on the ear canal. This causes fluid to back up and become infected. An ear infection will need to be treated as soon as possible to prevent any permanent damage to the ear drum.

As well, your baby might experience fever when the teeth are coming in. But keep in mind that normal teething doesn’t cause a high fever. Never ignore a high fever in an infant. There could be a chance that either an ear infection or sinus infection has developed. You’ll need to take your baby to its pediatrician to be examined and see if a prescription is in order.

There are quite a few other signs that your child might be teething as well. For example, red cheeks usually accompany this process. If one cheek is red and the other isn’t, look for a new tooth to appear on the red side.

Another sure sign is an overabundance of drool. Of course, babies always drool, but during teething it will increase dramatically. You might even find that you have to change your baby’s clothes frequently because of the excessive drooling.

Teething can also be the explanation for unexplained, sustained periods of crying and misery. Excessive crying is one of the hardest teething symptoms to deal with. This is usually accompanied by difficulty sleeping. Either of these situations will be uncomfortable for both you and your baby.

Most people who offer you baby advice will suggest that you give your child some pain reliever to ease the symptoms. However, discuss the situation with your doctor before administering any medications, even over the counter ones.

Effective Parenting Roles That Teach Accountability

Posted By Matt Hellstrom on January 23, 2009 @ 7:40 pm
by Matt Hellstrom

Our primary job as an effective parent is to make sure our kids are able to function successfully on their own when they leave the house. Every decision we make should be made with that goal in mind. This knowledge and single-minded focus should help us to navigate the waters of parenting much easier, because we have a definite destination in mind.

Sounds hard? It is really easier than you would think. There are 2 areas where children need direction; problem solving and accountability. Children who are being ornery and basically disrespectful, are telling you that don’t know how to solve a problem. The easier part of effective parenting – go through the actions to identify and solve the problem. Then be sure to add the piece of accountability for the decisions they make, good and bad.

1. Problem solving is a process. Problem solving is difficult, otherwise we wouldn’t have any problems. Many kids with abusive behaviors don’t have the patience for the problem solving process. Parents need to understand the importance of problem solving in the learning process and not do it for the child. The time to start is when they’re young, because the problems are more easily solved then, even though the child may feel like they’re monumental. As they get older, they will be more able to solve the bigger problems if they’ve had experience with the smaller ones when they were young.

2. Coach them forward. All good coaches know that they can get the best out of their players if they stick to business and not to emotion. This too is our goal as effective parents. Being patient as we encourage them through this learning process will pay off in spades for them as adults.

3. You are their 1st role model. Sorry it is true. They are constantly watching your every move, good or bad. And learning from it. Approaching problems with a calm examining demeanor will lead them to do so. Don’t fret if you get frazzled over the banged fender every now and again, telling your child you handled that poorly and how you would do it differently next time, teaches them how to positively handle mistakes. Also start handing over life situations. Let them pay for their Happy Meal. This will help them become comfortable with handling their own life.

4. Strategies and solutions. Your job, being the effective parent that you are, is to figure out when they are ready to be taught and then what they are ready to learn. Confusing? Always start early and with the basics and you can’t go wrong. Remember this is a long process so be patient. To quote Max Lucado “the definition of patience is to let your child do something that takes them 3 hours that you can do in 15 minutes”.

5. Encourage their own problem solving techniques. When they start into adolescence, its time to let them try out what they have learned, on their own. Your job is to let go of more and more control, and praise and encourage their willingness to step up.

6. Keep setbacks and failures in perspective. This is life in a nutshell. Both experiences provide fertile ground for ongoing training. Look at these as opportunities that they are and you win. Calm and steady as you go and they win too.

Don’t fool yourself! Parenting is challenging (especially teens). And rewarding! With a little help from these friendly tips and skills, you are staying ahead of the effective parenting curve.
