Laws for Homeschoolers

Posted By Isabel Allen on May 28, 2009 @ 5:07 am
by Isabel Allen

Millions of children in the United States are homeschooled. It is projected by the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) that by 2015 this number will reach over 12 million. The United States Constitution does not have specific laws concerning education; each state has its own laws concerning homeschooling and governs its education. So, you will only have to learn the laws for your individual state if you’ve considered homeschooling your children.

From state to state, homeschooling laws vary. Many states delegate the authority of mandating to provide for its students to the state’s Board of Education. The state Board of Education wants to ensure that every child receives an adequate education. A Federal law was passed, the Equal Education Opportunities Act of 1974 because of this mandate. Based on their race, color, sex, or national origin, the law requires that no state can deny any child an education. In other words, every child is guaranteed an education within every state.

While an education cannot be denied to a child in any state, whether it be a public school, private school, or homeschool, it is ultimately up to the parent to choose where that child will attend school. Some private schools, and public schools, are regulated by the state. There are often few regulations for homeschools since a large percentage of homeschool families do so for religious reasons.

One state law that appears to be universal is the requirement for children to attend school in some fashion during set compulsory ages. These ages, however, may be different in each state. Some states require children to be in school from 5 to 17, others 7 to 16; it just depends on the state’s laws. To determine what your state’s compulsory ages are you can search the internet, or contact HSLDA.

National Home Education Network, Home School Legal Defense Association, and other websites on the Internet, list the homeschool laws for each state. It would be advantageous to learn your state’s laws if you choose to homeschool. You can go back to these sites to find the laws for the new state if you move to another state, especially if you are a military family who has begun to homeschool.

Military families, throughout the length of a soldier’s career, often move several times. One way to guarantee continuity in their children’s education is choosing to homeschool. Without fear of negative impact, a military family that homeschools can continue their child’s education rather than transferring a child from one school to another.

Choosing to homeschool is not always an easy decision to make. However, it is legal in each of the fifty states. You may have to register your intent to homeschool with your local board of education or you may have to turn in portfolios. Whatever your state requires, just remember that you are allowed by law to homeschool your child, and that there are places to turn if you have questions.

Considerations When Seeking New Stair Gates

Keeping children safe is the prime consideration in every parents mind. This is why choosing the right products like safe and trusted stair gates needs to be done with care. Just because something is being marketed for children does not mean that it is safe and dependable.

Parents should know that there are some tips to keep in mind to make selections of safety stair gates and other child protection devices an easy and worry free process.

Stair gates that are JPMA or CPSC certified are preferred.

Choose stair gates manufactured with durable materials and latch fittings.

Be sure that the stair gates are being used in appropriate areas for the product. Some safety gates are to only be used on stairways.

Choose a mounting system that is easy to install and will work on the walls of your home.

Certifications

Products for children that obtain the certification seal from JPMA or CPSC are considered to be of the highest gold standards. This seal guarantees that parents are choosing an item that has met or exceeded every manufacturing guideline that promotes safety. ASTM is a group that lists safety features and quality standards for child-safe products going to market while the JPMA monitors whether or not childrens products actually meet those required safety standards.

JPMA is a separate product authority that works with ASTM and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to develop and maintain the highest level of standards and quality for the juvenile marketplace. When you notice the JPMA certification seal of approval you are assured that the product you purchase has been tested both during and after the manufacturing process. JPMA will only approve juvenile products like child stair gates after these items have met the most stringent criteria standards.

Stair Gate Mounting Choices and Material Strength

When selecting safety stair gates families should always gravitate towards those that are manufactured from resilient, trustworthy material. Cheaper products are readily available, however, they are typically made from cheaper plastics or unstructured wood. These stair gates do hold up under the weight of a determined small child or heavier pet and can disastrous results.

Mounting systems have to be constructed with materials that will be sound after they are installed. Hardware consisting of metal mounts is perfect and twill typically not give in when small children and larger pets are applying force as they attempt to climb or push on the stair gates.

Visual Appeal

It is only reasonable that parents would want safety features that have a certain aesthetic quality. You can find a number of different styles of child safety gates that block access to dangerous areas like open doors, kitchens and stairs. Many of these childproof gates have colors and designs that will let them blend into any type of decor.

Families need to be sure that they are not sacrificing safety features when choosing one of the more design oriented gates.

Our Children Deserve the Best

Deciding upon and installing trusted and quality stair gates to make your home a safer environment is of the utmost importance. A child’s safety should never be in jeopardy because of a poorly chosen safety item.

Families should always choose safety items that are made of quality materials, are certified by the JPMA or CPSC, and have a strong, reliable mounting system. This will provide your home with the kid friendly safety features that you can rely upon.

Should Children Wear an Athletic Mouthguard?

Posted By Lawrence Green on April 17, 2009 @ 3:24 am
by Lawrence Green

Every spring sporting activities increase and so do trauma to the mouth of children. These injuries could greatly decrease if children were wearing properly fitted mouthguards. In fact, the use of custom-fabricated mouthguards not only protect teeth and mouths it decreases the likelihood of a concussion as well.

Children participate in activities where injuries to the face may occur at any time, from a pickup basketball game to organized team sports. It is interesting to note that only a few amateur sports such as football, boxing, ice hockey, men’s lacrosse, and women’s field hockey require the use of mouthguards. These sports nowdays have fewer injuries and tooth loss than basketball and baseball. It is important that parents be informed of the benefits of wearing mouthguards.

Kids do not like to wear a mouthguard for several reasons, first it makes it difficult to breath and speak, second the fit and feel is not comfortable and then there is the stigma of not being cool. In addition special considerations are necessary for mouthguards for young athletes and athletes in fixed orthodontics. The guard must compensate for tooth eruption and growth in the young adults. You dentist can see to these difficulties easily.

There are three basic categories of mouthguards. They include: Type I (stock) Type II (mouth-formed) Type III (custom-fabricated)

Type I mouthguards are inexpensive but offer the little protection. They are available at sporting good stores, and can be worn straight out of the package without any modification. They are also the most cumbersome and least comfortable.

Type II mouthguards are the “boil and bite” type. These are also store bought, they are extremely popular. The guard is boiled in water and an attempt is made to fit it to the mouth of the wearer.

Type III mouthguards are custom-made from impressions of the mouth. These are considered superior to the others. They afford the most protection because they are closely fitted to the teeth and mouth of the child. Due to the custom fit it is more comfortable, and it is easier to speak with it in the mouth, therefore children’s compliance goes up compared to type I and II.

Mouthguards are usually designed for the type of sport being played. They are crucial in preventing teeth and mouth injuries as well as concussions. Children prefer mouthguards that are comfortable, soft, and resilient, which is the characteristic of a custom-fitted mouthguard. It is important for those who participate in sports to have proper protection. There is no reason to risk a lifetime of dental problems when a mouthguard can give children the protection they need.

Parenting from the Inside Out: Parenting Tips from a Parents View

Posted By Matt Hellstrom on April 12, 2009 @ 3:22 am
by Matt Hellstrom

I wanted to spend some time talking about the things I need as a parent to work on. You don’t find this information discussed in a lot of parenting skills arenas. And this tendency to not look within and be open about it, makes me feel like the areas where I am inadequate are horrible. And there is a sense of being hopeless that accompanies that because I don’t know what to do replace them and then with what?

In the Total Transformation program, I found answers to replace my internal accusations. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least, that James Lehman, the author, addresses those areas that would seem to cause me to derail. Not to mention lose sleep. But mostly, inhibit my parenting from being as effective as it could.

A Change is in the Air

Here are a couple of the of the parental changes that I made that gave me immediate results.

1. Family business. Deal with behavioral issues in a semi-formal business-like manner. Keep your emotions out of it as best you can. This will make it easier to maintain control. Try not to take the behavior personally, it will make you ineffective.

2. Transition Time. This is one of my favorites. Basically, discuss with your children that there will be a 10-15 minute window when either of you gets home where no questions are asked or problems presented. Everyone gets these few moments to unwind, catch up on the news of the day and reenter the family. Doing this without being barraged will make you a happier, interested parent. And your teen won’t feel attacked.

3. Responsible love vs unconditional love. There is only one person who was capable of loving unconditionally and it is not me. But we are able to love our children responsibly. Parental love is actually an intellectual love not an emotional love. You will not lose your child’s love if you set up rules. Don’t parent out of this fear. Kids pick up fear a mile away and use it to control you. I have always said that there are 2 things a child wants to know to feel loved and safe -”Who is in charge here and do you love me?”.

4. Replacement and reciprocity. Have an arsenal of correct behaviors to give your child to replace inappropriate ones. Let them know the benefits of dealing with a situation in a right manner. This is much more effective than yelling “Stop!”. You must have these behaviors etched in your mind ahead of time and do require some creative skills.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of areas we as parents can improve ourselves. Especially if we were not modeled good parenting as kids. Don’t be afraid though to start changing yourself in this process. The rewards will come in great bounds with an open, more loving relationship with those kiddos. And that is priceless.

Baby Boy Clothes - Back To The Future?

Posted By Paula Heron on April 9, 2009 @ 5:57 am
by Paula Heron

It is really only since the twentieth century that childhood as a concept has been recognized and this is reflected in the changes in baby boy clothes and baby girl clothes.

Prior to the twentieth century, children were forced to grow up a lot faster. For example, until the last part of the eighteenth century the age of starting a job was as low as five for some unfortunates in the lower classes. Clothing for children was simply a smaller version of adult styles.

These copies of parent’s clothes were very restrictive and reflected the fact that childhood was not seen as a special time but a precursor to adulthood. During these eras play was not encouraged as it was seen as a waste of time therefore play clothes were not needed.

For centuries before, the use of swaddling to restrict newborn baby movement and to promote correct posture had been used. Often this was applied for the first year of a baby’s life so no other clothes were required. The habit has reduce enormously in Western cultures but it is still practiced extensively in some Eastern societies.

But by the end of the eighteenth century the use of long gowns to clothe both baby boys and baby girls had become common. One initial benefit was that they helped to keep baby feet warm because they were very long, but as the child began to walk the length of the gown stopped at the ankles.

By the time they advanced to toddler age both boys and girls were clothed in copies of Mom’s dress. Since the European Middle Ages, when clothes were washed not as often as we do now, the preference had been for dark colors so that dirt and stains were not as noticeable. The wealthier classes were able to afford more colorful and elaborate clothes and that indicated their status.

The convention of dressing both sexes alike until they became four or five years old started to change by the end of the nineteenth century. By the end of World War One, 1918, the romper suit had been “invented” and so differentiation between the sexes was the norm. Baby boy clothes made a dramatic change due to this type of suit that is believed to have a French origin.

Preschool boys are thought to have been the first to adopt the romper suit fashion, with the result that baby boys were now identifiable separately from baby girls. The first suits had long sleeves and covered the legs as far down as the knees. Long stockings completed the outfit. Toddlers wore boots and as fashions developed, two piece suits and suits made from velvet added to the more prevalent one piece basic option.

Then romper suit styles began to change farther. Modern shoe styles (for example, sandals) replaced boots and knee length suits became shorter. Short socks, usually white, replaced the longer stockings. Developments such as frills, lace collars, smocking and more colorful fabrics resulted in less formality, more decoration and variety than in the past, beginning with the 1920s.

But now in the 21st century, romper suits have reduced in popularity. In what is almost a reversion to earlier fashions, baby boy clothes and children’s clothes have once again become smaller versions of what their parents wear, although a wide range of colors now prevails. When Mom wants to find a small version of Dad’s polo shirt or jeans or khakis, there is almost no limitation. At least we are not returning to the time when work started at five years old and play was not considered important!

Scrapbooking With Your Kids

Posted By Sibusiso M. Maseko on @ 4:43 am
by Irene Mmari

None of us like to lose memories of the past because these jog the memories of individuals of the good experiences they received in their life. As a way to keep hold of pleasant memories and experiences, increasing numbers of parents encourage their kids to produce their own scrapbooks at such an early age so they can keep their youthful memories in a semblence of order. Indeed, scrap booking is nearly the most effective and enjoyable ways of keeping memories secure and fun to view. By gathering and keeping bits and pieces of memories in concert, anyone can make, and tell a tale, so for children, scrap booking can be a learning experience because this can instruct them the value of resourcefulness, creativity, patience, and persistence.

Scrap booking is pleasurable activity you can share with your kids and one of those pursuits they can participate in with their playmates and friends. Still, before you get emotional and start to teach your children the pleasure of scrapbooking, there are some matters you need to think about. The initial thing is to encourage your children to get into scrapbooking, is their involvement in the craft. So, if your child is one of those who are into fine arts and into collecting mementos to create another work of art, then she or he is the exact prospect for the pursuit because they have the driving force.

If your child is not yet concerned with arts and crafts, it doesn’t mean they cannot indulge in scrap booking because in fact, this is the perfect time to introduce the to a new world of exciting and pleasant activity. Aside from the involvement of your kid in creative artworks, another matter you must think about is the accessibility of space where your kids can carry out the pursuit. Since scrapbooking requires a lot of materials, you will want a space large enough for them to sprawl and to scatter the materials they will use. It is advisable you provide a space where children can do it and a site where they can store their gear.

Next, you will want to think about the quantity of stuff your kid will need and since you are about to teach them basic scrap booking, you will need stuff which you can find about your house. Your kids will require paper or scrapbook paper, usually 12 inches by 12 inches in size, pens and colored pencils and photographs. Tools such as hole punches, pairs of scissors, card and paper trimmers and rules, stamps - rubber, clear and foam, glue and removers, in addition old cards will also be useful but this list only contains the basics of what they can use because almost anything can be utilized in producing a scrapbook.

Cost economizing are essential for those parents who want to teach their kids scrap booking but don’t have the wherewithall to purchase costly supplies and materials. So, if you are running to a budget, collect old photographs and let your children junk the pictures you no longer want and whenever you go to the developing center, ask for the double photographic prints and let your kids play around with the duplicates.

Then after finishing a specific project, make certain that you put the leftovers and unwanted scraps in a box so the kids can use it for another project. Don’t forget to go over your old stuff and bring out the supplies you will no longer use but direct your kids in producing scrapbooks, so they will not consume supplies, time and effort in creating projects they cannot use.

Minnesota Kids Summer Camp

Posted By A Former Camper on April 8, 2009 @ 3:10 am
by A Former Camper

The North woods of Minnesota is more than the pristine beauty of lakes, forests and eagles flying overhead. To me it’s Summer Camp! Swift Nature Camp is so much more than another home with another family, it’s a special Minnesota Camp

This summer home is filled with acceptance, love, encouragement, and true, down to earth friends who you will end up calling your camp family. Your counselors act as parents, older siblings, etc. They are great people to look up to. The campers are great friends for life. You may even end up looking at them as siblings. Acceptance is everywhere, no one kicks you out of the cabin because of who you are. Your uniqueness is celebrated. This is the main reason why I love Swift Nature Camp…it’s so much more than just having fun.

Activities are everywhere at summer camp, there is so much to do. Here are just a few: Archery, Swimming, Fishing, Boating, Tubing, and Riflery. You are never bored and active all day long. The counselors help you get better regardless of that your skill level is. All activities are noncompetitive and so we all support each other, rather than worry who is best.

When I think of Swift, I think of trips. I’ll never forget the Superior Hiking Trail or going to Ely. What an adventure! I loved the trails, nature, and sights of the forest. It was fun getting to know the other persons that hike with you. The wildlife you see is extremely cool. We saw hawks, bald eagles, deer, ospreys, trout, and carp. This is why I love Minnesota Camps

Life in a cabin is about learning from others and with others. It is becoming a team of understanding. Sure, sometimes we had our fights or minor issues, but almost always they were resolved and we grew closer as a team for them.

I always loved the Nature Center. It is a great place to learn about Nature and the Environment. The Director is always fun and teaches us loads of cool things but its not at all like school. There are all sorts of animals that are fun to observe and hold. One day they even made me feel a little more comfortable when I was homesick.

I’m returning to Swift Nature Camp for all these reasons. I love camp and hope to be a Counselor in training when I’m sixteen and then a counselor when I’m eighteen. So, I’ll see yawl in the North woods of Minnesota this summer!

Helpful Tips for New Moms

by Kelly Jones

If you are a new mom who wants to get back into shape after just having a baby you can rest assured knowing that this is possible. The downside is that it will not necessarily be easy or happen quickly. It is even more difficult if they baby you just had is your first.

There is no shortage of advice for new moms or people eager to dole it out. Everyone seems to have an opinion on topics ranging from breastfeeding to car seats. The most frustrating part is that there does not seem to be a consensus on what the right answers are to these topics either.

The advice isn’t any more clear when it comes to the topic of exercising. Some are passionate about not exercising for the first two months while others are okay with it providing that you don’t over exert yourself. If you do opt to begin working out, be certain to replace any fluids that your body loses by drinking lots of water and keeping yourself hydrated.

After childbirth you body continues to recover for several months. Those under thirty years of age, may be fortunate and have their weight bounce back fairly quickly. This is even more likely if they were not overweight to begin with. It is possible to lose weight during this time, but ensure that you take it slowly so that you do not risk health problems.

It has been said that a new mom needs an extra five hundred calories per day to produce the required milk for her baby. It is for this reason that you should not hop on any strict diets just so that you can lose weight more quickly. The risks of upsetting this balance are really not worth it.

Make it a priority to take at least half an hour each day to recharge your self. You exert a lot of energy through out the day and taking some personal time is vital. You need to be proactive with this though, because if you are not, nobody else will be for you.

You could read a few chapters of your favorite book or you could call a friend you haven’t spoken to for a bit. Do something relaxing or even go for a light stroll. Keep a list handy of things you can do during this time so that you don’t waste it trying to think of what you could be doing.

If you are a new mom, you may realize that your baby is eating all your time and you do not have time to spend with your partner. You have to manage your time and talk to your partner. Finding someone to take care of the baby while you spend time with your partner is important. Time management is the key and if you can address this effectively, you relationships will be that much stronger.
