What is Crohn’s Disease?

Posted By Angkoon Anuwong on May 28, 2009 @ 3:45 am
by Angkoon Anuwong

Crohn’s disease is a bowel disorder. It involves inflammation of the area and is inoperable. As a consequence, it can be quite a difficult disorder to live with, along with its many symptoms. This disease has a tendency to effect the quality of life of those who suffer with it, which is why they usually search for Crohn’s disease treatment. There are a certain number of conventional treatments available for the disease, though many sufferers find that they do not work for them, searching instead for alternative treatments.

Patients will need to be thoroughly examined before any treatment plan is worked out. Symptoms will always range in severity, which is why the same treatment does not work for everyone. In the earliest stages patients will usually try traditional over the counter remedies made for anti-diarrhea treatments, including Imodium A-D. It is most common for sufferers of Crohn’s disease to visit a gastroenterologist who will work out a treatment plan, usually involving Corticosteroids or Aminosalicycaltes if the symptoms are moderate to mild. However, for many these treatments are simply ineffective which is when medication will then be prescribed to curb the immune system.

Unfortunately, traditional anti-inflammatory medication, such as Ibuprofen, cannot be used by those with Crohn’s. Medications such as these will often exaggerate the symptoms and cause more to appear. This is why corticosteroids are often prescribed. However, even these kind of steroids cannot be used for the long term as there is possibility of addiction to the steroid, as well as the fact that they become ineffective over time. Not only this but they may cause a number of serious side effects including high blood pressure, osteoporosis and the risk of infection.

If the treatment for Crohn’s disease requires medicine to suppress the immune system then this will also come with an increased risk of infection. This is because the immune system is in a much weaker position to be able to fight off any infection properly. This also means that sufferers of the disease are more likely to develop diseases such as cancer at some stage in their life, as the body is unable to fight of abnormal cells.

When symptoms experienced by sufferers of Crohn’s disease are particularly extreme then the gastroenterologist may even recommend surgery that removes affected parts of the bowel. Though this will reduce symptoms, many sufferers of the disease choose not to go with this treatment.

There are also a number of natural treatments available for Crohn’s disease. Aloe is the most common treatment, having been scientifically proven as an anti-inflammatory. Since this treatment is completely natural it is usually harmless to those who use it. Anti-inflammatories such as also will also aim directly at the inflammatory responses of the whole body, where traditional treatments would only focus on one molecule at a time. They also do not obstruct the immune system, which is another added benefit to this natural treatment.

It is important to seek advice from a gastroenterologist who can recommend the right treatment for Crohn’s disease based on the severity of the symptoms.

How To Find Your Way To Sustainable Weight Loss

by Lena Hellsten

For many people, weight loss is an issue that feels like a struggle and almost impossible to achieve. Some goes from one diet to the other without getting the results they are seeking and wondering why its just not working out for them as they would like it to.

There can be a lot of different reasons why you arent able to lose weight if this is the case. What is important if youre after success is to discover your own personal way to a slim and fit body.

Often the reasons why a lot of people fail to lose weight as they would like to goes deeper than to only be bodily conditions. Beneath every circumstance in your experience lies a belief upon which this is being formed. This is true also with your bodily weight and by going to the core you can find out what believes that are responsible for your disability to lose weight.

Most believes we carry with us have been inherited from our parents and peers throughout our lives. If there has been a strong emotional response together with the belief, it normally makes an even deeper imprint in our system. This might end up in an unconscious habit or pattern of behavior.

For example, someone might have experienced a time in their life when they felt lonely and abandoned. Then they found that the only way to sooth this feeling was to eat. Whenever this person felt lonely she now turned to food. A behavior pattern was created and when this person in her adulthood felt lonely, she ate more and more. When the person then put on weight, she might begin to believe that no one wants to be with her and she feels even more lonely ” a so called vicious cycle is being formed.

In this case it is important to go to the core of what is actually making the person eat, instead of just trying to stop eating as much. Look at this feeling and find ways to heal it. This can be done with hypnosis, nlp, by beginning to focus on what it really is the person wants, positive affirmations, EFT(emotional freedom technique) and forgiveness of the past, to mention a few possible tools.

The important part is to find a way to release whatever it is that is at the core of the pattern and in this way release also those behaviors thats related to it.

There are many other reasons for overweight and what is important is to find out what rings true for you and find out what it is that will work for you.

Looking for Lasting Weight Loss? Beware Quick Weight Loss Fads

Posted By Brad Morgan on May 9, 2009 @ 3:06 am
by Brad Morgan

There are so many diets on the market, all promising to help you achieve the body you have always wanted. The problem, though, is that many quick weight loss diets are quick because they are not lasting.

There are a number of absurd-sounding diets ? eat nothing but cabbage and lose weight! Eat nothing but grapefruit and lose weight! Most people can lose weight if that is all they are putting into their bodies.

These quick weight loss diets and others like them inevitably fail. To lose weight and maintain your ideal weight, you need real change in your life. Not a fad.

It is understandable why so many people turn to quick weight loss diets. We always hold out the hope, despite our present and past frustrations, that this diet is different. It will work if we only try hard enough.

For other people, it is a quick fix and instant gratification. Sometimes, we are not willing to wait for lasting change, so we’ll take the temporary satisfaction of seeing results, no matter how fleeting they are.

Here are some of the many reasons why fad diets don’t live up to the hype:

1. They’re boring!

Often, quick weight loss diets don’t provide our bodies and appetites with a variety of foods. We end up eating the same foods, day after day.

It quickly becomes tedious to prepare food and eat it. While you may think this will help you eat less, it actually leads to?

2. Cheat a little

If you’ve been doing well on your fad diet, eating the same foods in the same amounts for days, you figure you’ve earned the reward of a sugary, high calorie treat. That one little treat, a tiny harmless cookie, can lead you down the road to overeating.

You often consume more calories and fat when on a quick weight loss diet because they are so hard to stick with and get back on when you slip.

3. Not made to last.

Considering the boredom and risk for overindulging, many quick weight loss diets are very hard to stick with.

4. The risk of gaining weight.

Many people actually gain more weight when they go on a quick weight loss diet. Whether it is because it is so easy to cheat or you overeat when you stop the diet, your body tends to pack on pounds.

Either way, it is a serious blow to your efforts when you have even more weight to lose.

You don’t need quick weight loss diets. What you do need is to develop good eating and exercise habits.

There is just no other way to lose weight and maintain your ideal body size. Good diet and exercise are essential.

To see real and lasting changes in your body, incorporate some of the following into your life:

* Make sure to get plenty of veggies. These are nature’s super foods and are excellent for health and weight loss.

* Add more fiber to your diet. Not only does it help improve overall health, it helps your body burn more fat.

* Sprinkle 5-6 small meals throughout your day.

* Rethink your ?big? meals. Dinner should be your smallest meal, and breakfast should be the biggest.

* Move more. Even simple things like taking the stairs, doing some sit-ups and pushups during commercials, or playing catch with your child can have a big impact on your fitness level.

* Have regular workouts. If you are too busy for one long exercise session per day, do several short ones.

* Eat more whole grains.

* If you’re going to eat something, make it nutritious. Don’t waste your calorie allotment on junk food or sugary drinks.

These simple steps and many more can help you make drastic changes in your body and health. Just by adding some new habits to your life, you can safely achieve weight loss.

The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to adopt a healthier lifestyle. It will become part of your everyday life, not a “diet,” which means it will be much easier to stick with.

Why settle for temporary solutions offered by quick weight loss diets? They are full of empty promises.

Why osteopaths recommend acupuncture

Posted By Andrew Mitchell on April 26, 2009 @ 3:24 am
by Andrew Mitchell

As Eastern healing practices have risen in popularity in recent years, it seems as if Eastern and Western approaches to health are constantly butting heads. This isnt always necessarily so. More osteopaths are now recommending that clients adopt both and do a combination of Western osteopathy and Eastern Acupuncture.

Originating from the Far East, acupuncture takes a holistic approach to health and encompasses a practice which has been refined over the past 2000 years. Its underlying philosophy holds that health is dependent on the free flow of our bodys energy ” known as Qi ” through a system of pathways that lie beneath the skin. All pathways are linked to the vital organs, so if the flow of Qi is upset in some way (i.e. by emotional turmoil or physical injury), the bodys health and harmony is disrupted.

Acupuncture works by placing a number of miniscule needles into specific pressure points in our body that run along the energy pathways under our skin. Not only does this stimulate energy flow and disperse pent-up tensions, but it taps into the bodys own healing response, which is capable of restoring its natural balance.

But what does acupuncture have to do with osteopathy? The two actually have very similar philosophies. Both believe that a problem can only be solved if you eliminate the source of the illness, rather than merely treating its symptoms. They see the body and mind as being interconnected, which is why osteopaths often recommend acupuncture in combination with osteopathic treatments.

While many view acupuncture of simply being a treatment that alleviates pain, the therapy does much more than that, helping heal specific conditions and illnesses. Below are some examples of what acupuncture can help with:

- High blood pressure and circulatory problems

- Cranial problems, including headaches and migraines

- Respiratory problems. These include asthma, breathlessness, and various others.

- Musculo-skeletal complaints, helping alleviate pain in the muscles and joints. Deals with many osteopathic problems such as sciatica, frozen shoulder, arthritis, and stiffness in the knees and neck.

- Allergies

- Insomnia or difficulties relaxing

A lot of patients have also expressed that acupuncture has given them gives a better sense of wellbeing ” improving their energy levels, vitality, and overall health.

People are often apprehensive about acupuncture because needles are involved. Therapists reassure their clients by explaining that the needles used for acupuncture are not the same as those they use at the doctors office for injections. They are a lot finer and do penetrate the body very different ways. While everyone responds to pain differently, many do not find the experience painful at all.

Some are sold on the idea of western medication. Others are convinced that natural healing is the only way to go. But we dont have to choose one practice over the other. For people in chronic pain or with debilitating injuries, merging eastern and western practices may be the best hope to feeling fitter, stronger, and healthier.

How to Nix Poor Health Habits

Posted By Benedict Hunter on April 24, 2009 @ 3:06 am
by Benedict Hunter

Choosing to live an active, conscientious lifestyle can do wonders for your health. Exercise is an indispensable part of a healthy lifestyle and everyone who aspires to live a long healthy life needs to practice it.

There are a lot of simple activities one can do to stay fit such as walking or jogging, playing tennis with friends, or even mowing the lawn. However, if you are after muscle mass or great-looking abs, then spending some time in a gym will work for you.

Why Do You Exercise?

There are three reasons why people go to the gym:

* They are overweight and the only way to shed those extra fats apart from sensible dieting is to sweat it out in the gym through rigorous exercise.

* They are hoping to build muscle mass by lifting weights and doing other intensive exercises.

* They just want to stay in shape and enjoy the social interaction at the same time.

An effective workout should cover all the bases. It should include aerobic and strength building exercises, as well as stretches to improve flexibility and prevent injuries. These comprehensive programs burn lots of calories, lower your body fat percentage, and improve metabolism.

What You Can Expect To Gain

1. Ward off many illnesses and slow the aging process.

2. Control the production of stress hormones like cortisol and exchange it for endorphins, which will infuse you with good feelings.

3. Live a longer, healthier life than someone who does not engage in physical activity.

Working out to reach a desired level of fitness should be done progressively. Neither strength nor endurance can be achieved in a day but a sensible fitness program will eventually bring in tremendous benefits.

A Diet to Match Your Workout

No fitness regimen would be complete without a quality diet behind it. Maintaining your diet is often the hardest part of getting fit and staying that way, but regular exercise can help make it easier. The two work together to make your body strong and healthy.

It is possible to reach your fitness goals without expensive vitamins, protein shakes, or gym equipment. And you don’t have to give up the foods you love, either. Just eat them in moderation and engage in regular exercise to keep your metabolism up.

Eat primarily foods that are high in vitamins and fiber. Good sources of these include potatoes, rice, nuts, and whole grains. The easiest and most efficient way to get your nutrients is by eating fruits and veggies, which supply you with phytochemicals. These substances are made up of micronutrients and enzymes and are indispensable to your health.

The body also needs fat and oils that can be obtained from mono and poly saturated food sources, and not animal fats. Because fat can easily double your calorie intake, it should be taken in the right proportion to either gain or lose weight.

Make Your Body a Temple

Avoid putting harmful substances like smoke or alcohol into your body. Smoking tobacco is known to cause cancer and complicates heart conditions, pregnancy, and a host of other illnesses. Alcohol also has serious effects on your health and can lead to liver disease, heart disease, and substance abuse.

Good habits do not form overnight, just like bad ones take more than a few days to break. Just be patient and you will find that your new habits are taking root and becoming an incontrovertible part of your life.

Some More Information on Health Care Plans

Posted By Calvin Wapasa on April 23, 2009 @ 3:33 am
by Calvin Wapasa

Americans are finding the cost of health insurance increasing, so that the need for affordable health care is on the rise. Companies are using rising premiums and tighter financial budgets to reduce the level of health care available to their employees.

In this instance I speak with experience because my health care service has reduced this year for the first time ever. Just before Christmas, the company announced some changes including the replacement of our, now to expensive, health care supplier.

The excuse was that they were trying to ensure the new package would help everyone in the company. Many people I have spoken to are happy with the new insurance and that I am just as well provided for. To some extent I do agree, but their search for another provider now costs me double the money from my paychecks to have my husband and daughter on my policy. Taking a good deal less home in my paycheck to have my family remain on the health care policy seems to be the only option I have because almost everyone else is happy with the new arrangement.

My health care may still be very good despite the fact that the old company was much better than this new one. To my mind the whole point of providing this new affordable health care scheme was a cost cutting exercise for the company which just meant greater expense for some of their employees. My last policy took care of all the hospital stay when I had my little boy nearly 3 years ago. Compare this to the new health care plan and I would be out of pocket by over 4,000 dollars.

This figure does not take into account additional amounts I must pay out of my salary. Fortunately, more affordable health care scheme are being started to help those less fortunate. For workers in companies without health care plans and single mums for instance, this is a God send. I applaud the set up of these programs but not enough is done to stop those that wish to take advantage and ruin it for others.

For many people desperately trying to improve their situation these affordable health care plans are a life-line but to others they are just an easy option. Sometimes it is hard because your conscience says you should help but you know that many people that do not deserve help will benefit and the taxpayer is the one who pays. It is true to say that my employer is very happy because he found distinct benefits to finding a different health plan program. Having a reduced income seems to be the result of these work changes with only the company truly benefiting. Providing health care which is affordable for Americans needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

Qualifications For Medicaid Health Insurance

Posted By Max Foggleman on April 22, 2009 @ 3:28 am
by Don Bethune

If you fall into a low income group, you may very well qualify for Medicaid. People who donat have medical insurance or who have inadequate medical insurance may qualify. The guidelines for Medicaid are established by the Federal Government and administered by each state individually. For this reason, your eligibility will be determined by your State Agency, and that is who you must contact.

KEY ELIGIBILITY GROUPS Every state provides service to the members of particular, established eligibility groups. A state may also decide it wants to include additional groups for service with Medicaid. There are some groups that the state is required to consider. They are: Categorically needy, medically need, and special groups. Letas explore the criteria that defines the required key eligibility groups that must be included in a Statesa plan. You wonat find all the answers here. To know more, be sure to contact your State Agency.

CATEGORICALLY NEEDY Families who meet this qualification must qualify for the states eligibility requirements established for Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) that was put in place on July 16, 1996. Pregnant and children under the age of six are included in this category. A family income that is less than one-hundred and thirty three percent of the Federal poverty level must also be in evidence. Additionally, children who are between the ages of six to nineteen and whose family income is no higher than one hundred percent of the poverty level will qualify for this category. Couples or singles who live in medical institutions and have a monthly income no greater than three hundred percent of the SSI income standard (Federal benefit rate) will also qualify.

MEDICALLY NEEDY
1. Children under age 21, 20, 19, or under age 19 who are full-time students. If a state doesnat want to cover all of these children, it can limit eligibility to reasonable groups of these children.
2. Aged persons (age 65 and older). Blind persons (blindness is determined using the SSI program standards or state standards).
3. Disabled persons (disability is determined using the SSI program standards or state standards).

SPECIAL GROUPS Medicare Beneficiaries who qualify under #8221Medicaid are paid Medicare premiums, deductibles and coinsurance. These people are termed as Qualified Medicare Beneficiaries (QMB). Under #8221 people whose income that falls equal to or less than a hundred percent of the Federal poverty level with resources that are also equal to or less than two times the allowable standard in accordance with SSI might qualify. Furthermore, some groups may qualify for Medicare related expenses that are to be paid by Medicaid. Under #8221, Medicare beneficiaries whose income is greater than a hundred percent while remaining less than one hundred and thirty five percent of the Federal poverty level might also qualify.

When your eligibility has been determined, it may be possible for you to receive retroactive payments for up to three months prior to the time your application was filed. This determination will be based upon whether or not you could have been eligible during those three months. Naturally, if your circumstances improve and you become ineligible, your coverage will cease at the end of the month during which the improvement happened. A lot of states have a astate-onlya program in that supplements Medicaid. This program is especially designed to provide medical assistance to people who fall through the cracks. These are the people who have limited resources and income but canat qualify for the Medicaid program. This sort of state-only program does not get any Federal funding.

Mainly, the people who are eligible for getting Medicaid are people with low income levels or families with low household income as stated in the rules and eligibility requirements set by the state you are a resident in. You need to meet these requirements in order to qualify for the Medicaid insurance coverage.

So, before you apply for Medicaid, the best thing that you can do is check with your state laws regarding the rules and eligibility requirements on getting Medicaid.

Get A Good Healthy Lifestyle

Posted By Keith Harris on April 21, 2009 @ 3:20 am
by James Read

I used to read every article on health that came out, but lately I’ve given this up as a bad habit. Most people who know me would probably have said I was a health freak. You see, staying fit and healthy after being as grossly overweight as I was is understandable but if you are not careful you exchange one obsession with another.

Any articles on health I could find to help with my fitness, diet, supplements to help prolong life, I would read them. But nowadays, when I read an article on health, it just fills me up with anxiety, After all, one article on health will say one thing, another day and another article says something else. Take soy for example, one group of scientists tell you it’s good for you then another group say don’t touch it because it promotes the development of female hormones in men amongst other side effects. I swear, all I want is to find the perfect diet, the perfect exercise routine, and the perfect lifestyle to keep myself as healthy as I can for as long as I possibly can.

Who and what are you supposed to believe when all you want to do is find a good healthy lifestyle. Until recently, alcohol was thought of as bad for you, as were chocolate, and coffee. It now turns out that red wine is good for you as well as dark beer, dark chocolate and coffee, all of which are quite good for you in moderation. I can see that very soon these same experts will tell us to forget everything they have told us about our cholesterol levels and to start consuming cake, fast foods and ice cream again.

All that has come from this as far as I am concerned is a general disbelief of anything these so called health gurus say and I’ll look after myself than you very much. They have lost the right to tell me how to live but I suppose I’ll still read the odd article on health from time to time.

At the very best, articles on health can give me some health tips that will help me figure out how to exercise, and how to eat right, but the rest is just me listening to my body. Living a healthier life and being happier is what is really important to me so with a bit of luck I should be able to achieve this mostly on my own with very little help form experts.
