A Fun Time

Posted By Twyla on June 11, 2008 @ 11:35 am

I remember when my sister and I were young teenagers. We were really immature and it showed by what we did for fun. We used to call toll free numbers and order samples of diapers for our friends, hoping they would be embarrassed when they received them in the mail.

As we grew up in a very strict family, we were never allowed to go to parties and that sort of thing. We had to come up with our own entertainment on a Friday night and this seemed to be the best we could come up with. At the time, though, we considered it to be a great deal of fun.

Some nights we would go through the yellow pages and see what kinds of 800 numbers we could call and harass that night. One of our favorites was LL Bean. We used to call and use a British accent. It was fun at the time.

Setting Up an Online Store

Posted By admin on June 10, 2008 @ 1:08 pm

My wife has been assembling scrapbooking kits for many years now, and has been selling them in town for a small commission.  Sure, she doesn’t make a lot, but whatever she makes is spending money for us, so the more, the merrier.

She came to me the other day and told me that she had started up an online store to sell the kits that she had created.  I guess she signed up with an offshore merchant accounts company and they provided her with free shopping cart software that had an integrated credit card processing system.

So she has spent the better part of the past week setting up her store.  She has taken pictures of pretty much everything and it is starting to look like a nice site.

I have been doing the work around the house so she can get it finished - I bet it will do very well.

Shopping for my Brother

Posted By admin on June 9, 2008 @ 2:12 pm

As we get older, it seems to get harder and harder to find a good gift.  I mean, as our income levels get higher, we can find ourselves in the position to buy pretty much whatever we want, so why would we wait to get it as a gift?

That is the exact problem that I am in with my brother.  You see, we wanted to get him something unique for his graduation from school, but he has pretty much all the things that he needs.  But, that means that we can just get him something that he wants instead.

Talking to his wife, she told us that we should buy GPS for him.  I guess that is all he ever talks about, though he has never bought one for himself.

So, we will be going out later today to get him one - I just hope that he doesn’t buy himself one before the celebration - or we will have to come up with another idea…

Finding the Girl in Me

Posted By Twyla on @ 9:18 am

I have never been much of a girly-girl. I have never been to a salon, as I have always cut my own hair. I do not wear frilly clothes and I try to stay away from pink altogether. If anyone had told me a year ago that I would be taking monthly trips to a spa, I would have laughed in their face.

This all changed on my birthday. I received a spa basket from my new sister-in-law, who obviously did not know what kind of person I was. In the basket, there was a certificate for a free spa pedicure. Not wanting her to have wasted her money, I decided to use it.

That changed my life. I have never felt so pampered before. I loved the feeling of it and I decided that, since I rarely do anything for myself, I was going to go and do this once a month. I have stuck with it and it is the one thing that I look forward to more than anything.

Moving Brodie In

Posted By Twyla on June 8, 2008 @ 1:01 pm

Last year, my brother suddenly found himself with nowhere to live, when his apartment was sold as a condo. He asked if he could come and stay with us until he could get himself back on his feet. After several long discussions, my husband and I decided that we could certainly not abandon him without a home.

We decided to convert the basement into a suite for him. In order to do this, we had to replace the bedroom window, with one that was much larger, as the one that was in there would not be safe if there was a fire.

We put in a sash window and wired the larger room for a fridge and a stove. He has been down there for several months now and he said that it feels more like home than any place he has ever lived before. The kids love having Uncle Brodie around and he helps us around the yard. It has certainly worked out well for everyone.

Looking for a Killer Logo

Posted By admin on June 7, 2008 @ 11:16 am

One of the things that I have felt that my business was missing was a killer logo.  What I mean by that is that I need a logo that would be remembered by anyone that would visit the site.  I figured that if the logo was memorable, I would have more repeat visitors, and in turn, more business.

But creating a memorable logo was definitely not my strong point - I can’t really even draw a stick man that well.  So, I knew that I would need to find a company that did logos as their speciality, and rely on their skills and wisdom to create the masterpiece I was seeking.

I looked for logo design online, and found some good candidates for my task.  I have submitted a request to see some of their designs, and I will pick the best one out of the bunch for my logo design.

I can’t wait to see what they will come up with, and the effect on my business.  Needless to say, it is about time that I have a great logo for my site.

Full Coverage or Not?

Posted By Jenn Brockman on June 6, 2008 @ 10:05 am

I’ve been on the receiving end of enough other people’s accidents that I know how nice it is to have a car insurance policy that provides a rental car when I need it.

A rental car allows you to go shopping for another car without depending on friends or relatives for a ride. It makes it easier to go shopping for additional car insurance later too when you want to talk to your provider about the new car you are picking out.

Getting auto insurance quotes is actually pretty easy now days since many companies provide a way to shop on line but there are still benefits to meeting your agent in person too.

Usually the only way to get the option of a rental car is to buy full coverage auto insurance, but you may not appreciate it as much as I do so if the expense isn’t worth it to you, don’t buy it.

Help is on the Way

Posted By admin on June 5, 2008 @ 9:36 am

Today was not a good day to wake up.  It sounds bad, but sometimes having children is a disaster in itself.

Take today for example.  I woke up just half an hour ago, thinking that it was going to be a nice day.  I could hear the birds chirping and the sun shining in the window, and well, I had a good sleep as well.  It seemed like everything was going to be great until I went to make myself coffee.

Disaster!

My children had decided to put their rubber boots on, walk through the mud, and then stomp around the house.  There was mud on every carpet in the house, and I knew that there was going to be no way for me to get it out.

Thankfully, a phone call to the first listing under carpet cleaning Devon in the phone book has someone on the way to fix my problem.  Some days I sure “love” (insert sarcasm here) being a parent!

Helping Those in Need

Posted By Twyla on June 4, 2008 @ 9:05 pm

When I was going to college to become a dentist, I really wanted to be able to help people.  I had grown up in a poor family and I knew that I was very fortunate to be in college. I had worked really hard in school and I got great scholarships. It was the only way that I was able to attend.

I decided that I wanted to be able to offer discount dental to families that could not afford the price of seeing a dentist. I would eventually like to be able to offer quality dental care to everyone, even when they cannot afford it.

Whenever someone asks me about advice on coverage, I send them to Ameriplan. As far as I am concerned it is the best deal and the best coverage for those who need it and I am more than happy to help out these people in any way that I can.

Reverse Osmosis, What’s That?

Posted By Jenn Brockman on June 3, 2008 @ 2:12 pm

Ok, osmosis is something best known for happening in plants, right? It is a process where the plant cells act as membranes or kind of like a strainer. Water can come in or out, but larger particles like salts can’t. It is actually the balance of water and salt and living tissue on one side or the other of the membrane that causes the osmosis or the filtering to occur.

So, what does that make reverse osmosis? Well basically, it is the same process but done from the  inside out, rather than the outside in (extracting water from a plant rather than a plant taking in water).

Reverse osmosis is used in water filtration systems to help clean out the minerals and salts that build up in a water system. This is really helpful if you have your own water well or if you have particularly dirty local water. The system will be hooked up to the incoming water to your home and product clean and clear water through your pipes and water faucets.
