Stupid Assignment

Posted By admin on March 31, 2008 @ 10:52 am

I was get a little ticked off when a professor gives you an assignment during the last week of classes.  I find it to be a lack of respect and courtesy on their part.  By the last week of classes if they haven’t given you all the assignments at their plans that is just too bad for them.

I really need to give my philosophy professor piece of my mind because he assigned us a philosophy essay this last week of classes.  Not only did he assign an essay, but he gave us stupid essay topics that really didn’t apply to anything that we learned over the last term.

I don’t know if he thinks that we have nothing better to do than write an essay for his class instead of studying for our finals.  I think I will talk to him after the next class and let him know what I think.

Finding Out Cell Phone Caller Details

Posted By admin on March 28, 2008 @ 10:29 am

For the longest time a reverse phone search has been available both in the phone book and online from my phone company.  It has been particularly useful in finding addresses of friends where I have their phone number, and finding out what telemarketing company has been calling me.

But one thing that has been missing is the ability to do a cell phone number lookup.  There has been no where that you could find out who called you from a cell phone, or track down the address of your friend.

Today though, I did find a site that had a reverse directory for cell phones.  It was pretty sleek and I was able to try it out with some cell phone numbers I knew, including mine.  Though some of the information was somewhat sketchy at times, it is good to see that they are making progress - I am sure it will be more fully featured in coming years.  I can’t wait.

Tweaking My Online Marketing Strategies

Posted By admin on March 27, 2008 @ 7:44 pm

I have had a lot of practice marketing my business online over the past couple of years.  It has really been a trial and error process for me - some things have worked wonderfully, while others have not gone so well.  But, what I do like is that I can tackle these tasks just like a scientist, and create experiments, and then look at the results.

But sometimes, I have needed to pick the brain of someone that is a little more experienced than I am.  Quite often this is a way to get quicker answers on things that will take me a long time to figure out.  In terms of marketing my websites, I do hire an Internet Marketing Consulting firm from time to time so that I can pick their brains.

The firm that I use has been instrumental in both increasing my website traffic and saving me time in my testing processes.  They have seen it all, and for a couple of dollars they are happy to share what they have learned with me.

Right now, we are working on tweaking my online marketing strategies in order to streamline my marketing efforts.  I know that we are a ways off from getting things done, but I do know that the final results will be worth it.

Unlimited Conference Calling

When our company first started using conference calling there was not a lot of acceptance in our organization.  Many people who tried it out were either confused by the complexity or just plain scared of trying something new.  It actually took a couple of years before conference calling became popular in our organization.

Our original conference calling plan was designed to be charged by the minute.  This was fine at the beginning, but as the popularity grew, so did the bill.  In fact, it was at the point where our pattern of spending had to change our the company would go under.

It was at this point that we decided that we should find a company that had an unlimited conference calling package.  Of all the companies that we took a look at we found that AffordableConferencing.com was willing to offer us a great deal at a price that was lower than the competition.  We decided to try out their service for three months and decide from that point whether we would become permanent customers or find another conference call provider.

Now, almost a year later, we’re still using the same conference calling solution.  It is been a great experience so far, and they have helped us reduce our expenses and increase revenues.  If we had not changed conference calling providers when we did, I don’t think our company would be here today.

Business Luncheon Discussion

Posted By admin on March 24, 2008 @ 5:26 pm

I attend a business luncheon once per month with other professionals from other industries.  We share our problems, and try to help each other out with practical solutions.

Today, the Self Storage owner of the group voiced his problems with his business.  It turns out that he has been having problems with vandalism at the two properties that he owned.  Not only were the vehicles that were stored in his lot damaged, but there was also a number of his businesses that have had graffiti drawn on them.

We suggested that he could install security cameras (which he had not done yet) and  hire a security guard for the evening.  This way, it should be a deterrent for the vandals.

We also looked at other problems that the lawyer of the group was having and we dealt with them too.

It is really nice to go to these luncheons - you realize that you are not the only business owner with problems.

A Grand Essay

Posted By Twyla on March 23, 2008 @ 2:37 pm

While I was doing an art study in college last year, I came across a rather new artist whose pieces of art really caught my attention. I was fascinated and it seemed like every new piece that I looked at was created just for me. I fell in love with piece after piece and I definitely knew who I was going to do my essay on.

When I handed in my outline for my essay, my professor actually asked me who this Banksy artist was. I was impressed that I had fallen in love with the art of a person that my art teacher did not even know about. I knew it might be more difficult to write, but I was still determined to do it.

I worked many long nights on that essay, gathering as much information as I could and then assembling that information into what I interpreted it to be. My professor must have loved the essay because afterwards he devoted a whole class to this artist. I am glad if all I did was make him known in our little college.

He Finally Got It

Posted By Twyla on March 22, 2008 @ 4:43 pm

Every year when my birthday rolls around, I start to get depressed. I would love to stay young forever and if I could just give up on birthdays for good, I certainly would. My husband does his part to try and cheer me up by throwing grand parties and giving me great gifts, but really what I want is the opposite.

For a long time, I did not get why he didn’t understand that I don’t want a big deal made over something that makes me so sad. I would always put on a happy face for him and pretend that everything was perfect, but inside, I hated the whole thing and I usually went to bed in tears.

This year, however, my birthday was perfect. He came home from work and gave me a pair of theatre tickets and told me to get dressed for a dinner out. We went out, just the two of us to a fancy dinner and to the theatre. He never once mentioned that it was my birthday and we had a great time. He finally got it!

I am a Technical Convert

Posted By Twyla on March 21, 2008 @ 2:12 pm

Being fairly new to the world of developing and running my own website, I am learning so much. I did not realize that I would grow to love the knowledge that I would gain from trying out this new endeavor. I decided to build a website to promote my business and I have had such a good time doing it.

I had a friend come over and teach me about search engine optimisation and why this is important. I guess to me it is important because I want to have my site viewed as much as possible. The whole reason that I created the site was to gain a new clientele and I wanted to have as many people directed to the site as possible.

I certainly did not expect to enjoy the technical side of my business as much as I do and I am always thinking of ways to make the site better or make it more appealing to viewers. My friend likes to joke that I have been converted to the dark side and I told him that I would have become a convert years ago if I had known it would be so much fun.

The Future is Organic

Posted By admin on March 20, 2008 @ 4:49 pm

Now, I don’t want to talk to you about organic vegetables and meat – get a snack and come back to reading this post.

Alright, what I really want to talk about is how organic devices will be creeping into the electronics world really soon.  In fact, there are some devices that are already using organics instead of silicon in their devices.

One of the most influential groups will be the rollout of OLED devices.  OLED (organic light emitting diode) will allow for futuristic devices, such as flexible displays to be created.  Imagine being able to roll up your television and take it camping with you – that would be pretty useful, right?

Another use of organics will be very prominent.  There is work being done on OLED lighting as a replacement of our current dependence on fluorescent lighting.  It is thinner and more energy efficient that fluorescent lighting and can be easily placed anywhere in your home or business.

It will be interesting to see how organics continue to be used in electronics as there is a move from silicon based manufacturing.  I wonder what they will come out with next?

Dead Girl Searching

Posted By Twyla on @ 3:23 pm

I am in such trouble if I do not find the best data recovery software ever made. The reason is that I somehow erased the hard drive on my brother’s computer when I was explicitly told not to touch it. He is away for the weekend and I have exactly forty-eight hours to fix everything that I have done to it.

I went online on one of the computers at the library to find some recovery my files software. I even went to the store where my brother purchased his computer to see if they could help me. It turns out that they won’t even touch the machine without my brother being there, so I may be a dead person come Monday.

One of the guys that I go to school with told me that he has used digital photo recovery software before and said that if I could get my hands on a program to recover the hard drive, he doesn’t suppose it would be that much different. I hope he is right and I am glad he offered to help. I will hope for the best. If you never hear from me again, you know the outcome.
